Epoxy vs. Cement Grout — What Is the Difference?

Epoxy grout has gotten increasingly more popular among tile contractors and builders. I find benefits that are new every time I use this item. Unlike cement grout, which is created from a cementitious powder mixture, epoxy grout is made from epoxy resins and a filler powder. The grout is very durable and nearly completely stainproof. Normal grout is not watertight, so unlike epoxy grout, it may absorb water if it’s wet and stain easily. If you are tired of scrubbing the gunk off your grout, epoxy grout could be your solution.

Epoxy grout is created from two different resins blended with a filler, so which makes it very watertight and bettered suited to harsher cleansing products. Epoxy thinsets offer greater bond strength and chemical resistance than cementitious grouts.

Although it has plenty of advantages, note that epoxy grout is significantly more challenging to work with than regular grout. It also tends to look.

Regular grout is quite easy to shape in external corners in which tile wraps round a wall, curb or shower market. It’s more difficult to get the exact same effect with grout, since it takes a little more time to set up in the grout joint.

I find it makes the most sense to grout a toilet in 3 to five rounds. Epoxy grout sets quickly, so you don’t wish to mix all the grout to your toilet and dash it into position.

Epoxy grout haze or residue on tiles includes a glossy sheen. Ensure that your installer cleans your tile properly before and after grouting to avoid this.

My favorite epoxy grout is Spectra Lock Pro, which comes with two cleaning bundles to make washing before and following simpler. The special substances in these cleaning bundles help remove any excess resin residue from the tile surfaces.

The time needed to clean the tile and the large cost (it often costs three to fives times more than regular grout) may make some installers reluctant to operate with epoxy grout.

Some epoxy grouts are made only for glass. Many brands have a regular epoxy and a special glass tile epoxy, also. The difference is at the grout’s filler part. The filler for glass tiles is finer, so it won’t scratch delicate tiles.

Hint: Adding the grout into your tile colour (or into the lightest-colored tile, like in this shower) makes for a seamless installation. There is less forgiveness with contrasting grout colours; unless the tile setup is perfect, a contrasting grout will highlight the changes within grout breadth.

Brown, tan and mocha-colored grouts are hard to get right with regular grout. A lot of men and women are drawn to epoxy grout for its colour. The colour of epoxy grout stems from the filler and is continuous throughout. Normal grout may have its pigment removed during the cleaning phase.

You can make epoxy grouts sparkle by adding iridescent particles into your mixture. Ask your contractor to prepare a sample board beforehand to understand how much glow you truly want. The options are endless — you may even fine-tune colours by buying different fillers and mixing them.

Hint: Medium gray is the safest colour option for regular grout, because most installments gray out over time and water take their toll.

Extra-Large Grouting Sponge With Rounded Corners

Although opinions differ, I am not fond of using a regular grout sponge with epoxy grout. The slightly coarser epoxy grout sponges tend to get rid of excess epoxy grout from the tile surface much better.

Using an epoxy grout is totally different than using regular grout; no step is the same. From blending to program to cleaning, epoxy grouting has its own set of rules. Ensure that your toilet professional has experience with the goods and ask for a grout sample board before installation starts.
