Straightforward and Soothing in South Carolina

When a home is located in a lovely and pristine setting, sometimes the beauty outside is underwhelmed by a daring and intrusive interior layout. However, for this particular home in Sunset, South Carolina, the goal was to create a palette of texture and colour that would embrace the exterior. This house is a second house for a family of 5, also has a gorgeous lakefront site. Designer Yvonne McFadden streamlined the interior finishes and products to create a calm and peaceful vacation home with this busy family. “Everything in the interior was chosen so that it wouldn’t compete with the views, but enhance them,” McFadden says.

Since this was another home,”We did not have to manage the minutia that comes from regular living,” McFadden says. “Our goal was to simplify.”

An open floor plan gives this home a much more modern feel and makes household socializing and occasional entertaining simple and natural. The kitchen is at the identical great room as the dining room and the living room, making it the perfect spot for a celebration.

Open shelving in the kitchen helps maintain the easy, airy texture. McFadden used used flat-finish paint and a matte finish on cabinetry to create a softer contrast with all the rough-sawn wood and other organic textures.

To keep the design looking as simple and clean as the interior layout, McFadden stuck with 1-inch trim throughout the house. A dull-rub foam has been used on the floors, giving the wood the sturdiness of a polyurethane finish with the appearance of a waxed floor. “The craftsmen were so used to doing hefty trim and making all the surfaces shiny, so we had to work together to make them simplify the look,” McFadden says.

This house is part of a neighborhood in Sunset that overlooks Lake Keowee, observable out the windows in the main great room. McFadden refrained from detailed window treatments so that the house would adopt the lake viewpoints as much as you can.

This house was intended to be a vacation home not just for the household, but for friends to come and enjoy too! The customers wanted to ensure that there would be plenty of places for visitors to sleep, so McFadden squeezed two pastoral twin mattress frames into a spare bedroom.

Color pops out here and there, but overall that the palette was purposely muted to draw focus on the exterior environment. “My work is quite subtle. I am not a smart, flamboyant designer at all,” says McFadden. “I enjoy the lines and textures to talk louder compared to the palette. There is a softness to my work, and I think this home is a fantastic manifestation of that.”
