Comfortably Modern at San Francisco

Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) librarian Jason Galloway moved to San Francisco for part of a town that he already knew a lot about. “I loved San Francisco so much and understood so much about it before moving here that my first project was a concierge in a hotel, and people thought that I was a native,” Galloway says.

“When I first moved here I lived in Nob Hill in a quintessentially San Francisco Edwardian flat with bay windows. I thought that’s what I wanted to buy, but when the realtor showed me the attic, I fell in love,” Galloway says. He now lives in his dream attic, built in 1999, in the Mission Bay area of the SOMA district. “My area is quite industrial and modern and I really like that. But I also love that I’m on six Muni lines which get me wherever I want to go.”

The space that is unfurnished might have easily gone either completely modern or industrial. “I was originally going to go strictly modern, but I need my home to be comfortable for guests, and for me and the dogs,” Galloway says. Warm lighting and artwork make the attic space inviting.

A comfortable couch with clean lines and a small attitude anchors the living room area, and chrome accents bring together all the pieces in the area. This sofa, along with the lamp were found in one of Galloway’s preferred stores in the area, H.D. Buttercup.

Well defined areas give each space clear purpose. Dining table and these stools from DeLirio provide an area for breakfast or a romantic meal in the evenings.

There’s no escaping the urban industrial setting when looking through windows venturing out to the porch. To the left, the city skyline as well as the best, AT&T Park along with the commuter train station. The ever-changing billboard. Galloway says,”I stare at a huge billboard out my window and it changes often. Sometimes for the good, other times. . .not really good. I love the movie poster advertisements. It seems so’big city’ to me, but the PG&E advertisements not so much.”

Something Galloway simply can’t seem to get rid of are his books. “Whether you travel or in your head through books,” he states,”you must see the world!” One of his favorite things is your 12’x8′ picture mural of Paris from Murals Your Way. “I love Paris and Rome and nearly moved to Paris before choosing San Francisco,” Galloway says. “It could be better to be in love with Paris than reside there, I suspect.” Concerning the mural, he states,”I believe it actually defines our space. The Eiffel Tower steel beams atop trees and old buildings is exactly my style.”

San Francisco is no doubt a foodie city, and that’s one of the things which appealed to Galloway. “I love that I can walk out my door and within four cubes I’ve three separate coffee shops, umpteen restaurants, along with the bay.”

Galloway’s favored multi-purpose space is your kitchen. It’s employed as a DJ station, office area and of course, for cooking. Eclectic cabinetry and vibrant accessories heat the stainless steel countertop.

The most important tip Galloway offers those contemplating purchasing a loft is,”It’s important to create’rooms’ along with your own furniture and designate areas for dining and living .”

Living comes with its drawbacks of course. Galloway says,”I love the open area, but when the TV is on downstairs it seems to amplify up to the bedroom.”

Galloway keeps a collection of fashion photos in the bathroom. While reflecting on functioning at FIDM and how that has impacted his decorating choices he states,”I do presentations on tendencies and I’d say that having access to design sites and magazines affects me, either consciously or subconsciously.”
